Magazine redesign / Website / Branding

Editorially, CHOW brings a much-needed immediacy, hard-hitting journalism and accessibility to the world of food publishing. Our design follows suit by first commissioning stark, clean photography that captures real, decisive moments (as opposed to frozen, museum-like ones); second by creating layouts that are bold and unfussy, forwarding the content in clear, compelling and appropriate ways.

We also helped CHOW with a web site prototype that helped them get purchased by CNet.

Chow was a San Francisco-based food magazine aimed at the sophisticated, fast-moving urban audience not being tapped by the more fussy offerings on the newsstand at the time. Our redesign brought a more aggressively energetic flair to the magazine without sacrificing the necessary refinement needed to appeal to foodies of all kinds, helping it receive Amazon.com's #1 new magazine pick of 2005.

Both issues were designed in less than a month, with Volume responsible for all project aspects, from the commissioning and art direction of photography to complete design execution from concept to print production.
