E3 Expo is the world's premiere trade show for computer and video games and related products. E3 was effectively closed after 2006 due to cost issues, so for the 2009 relaunch in a fraught economic climate, brands did not want to appear pretentious and wasteful. Square Enix charged Volume with creating a dynamic experience in a space that was 50% larger and half the budget than previous years.

Volume created an uncluttered experience that connects with audiences on an emotional level. We also pushed sustainability practices to the limit by using customized speedrail fittings, mesh recycled plastic bottle fabric panels, and creating a new "green" wall system that was 25% lighter than traditional walls. FSC certified plywood was used for the game station counters and for the product display.
