California College of the Arts
Artists of Invention exhibition catalog
The display use of Hoefler & Frere-Jones Proteus Project font family suggests both a legacy of the hand-composed, the western frontier, and—through the mixing and matching of the font—California eclecticism.
This typographic (and regional) eclecticism is continued by using Bay Area designer Bob Aufuldish's New Clear Era for the text face.
Lastly we make additional nods to the energy of California art through the book's ebullient color palette and select use of silver, which on the cover also references the aforementioned importance of craft.
This volume presents a vivid portrait of Bay Area artists and art movements associated with the California College of the Arts through the 20th century. With the design of this book we sought to express the vibrancy of art-making and commitment to craft that CCA has embodied since its founding.
